FROM THE HEART
“I remember I was a small girl seeing my mum reading from a thick book
which looked like a bible. Printed on it was a Fijian word ‘Meditasio’, which
means ‘Meditation’. Mum was a sickly person but every day she would
have this book opened in front of her and I could see that she treasured
this book very highly because she had knitted a special green woollen
cover for it. The second time I encountered this word ‘Meditation’ was in
1992 when I was involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Three
members including myself of the Nadera Charismatic group attended the
Catholic Charismatic Convention in Brisbane, Australia. At the convention
there was a workshop on Christian Meditation which was led by Fr
Laurence Freeman… For me, attending his workshop was like ‘coming
    home’.

When I returned to Fiji I was very enthusiastic and started sharing
Christian Meditation… I then approach Fr Denis Mahony sm at the
Nazareth Prayer Centre and thus started a beautiful friendship with a
common goal of wanting to nurture, sustain and share this gift, this pearl
of great price that the Lord has given us.

For 13 Saturdays there were about 20 of us who went to the Prayer Centre
to listen to meditation tapes that Fr Denis had managed to get from
abroad. They were mostly talks by Fr John Main. After the 13 weeks we
formed groups mainly in the greater Suva area. I started with a few others
in the sacristy of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1994. All those who started
the group with me have now gone on to start their own groups.

Christian meditation forms community through our coming together once
a week to listen to the tapes and by our meditating together as a group. A
bond of friendship and love has really bound us together”
