FIJI - MEDITATING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE
FROM THE HEART
I am a Marist Sister from Ireland, who has been working in Fiji for many
years. Quiet prayer has been an important part of my life. Christian
meditation has been my gift from the Holy Spirit. I was first introduced to
Christian Meditation by Sr Loyola about nine years ago when she invited
me to the weekly meetings at Nazareth Prayer Centre. No explanation
was given; I was asked to come and “be”. Each time I came to Lami I felt
drawn to this deep prayer of stillness, silence and peace. I began asking
some questions and soon with help received from Fr Denis Mahony sm, I
knew this gift was for me.

Ten years later “Maranatha” has a very special place in my life and my
twice daily times of meditation are the hinges round which my day runs. I
try to spread this gift to others. Nine years ago I invited the girl boarders
of St John’s College to come to our little chapel, listen to one of Fr John
Main’s tapes and meditate. Their response was very positive. When I
moved to Levuka a few years later, I invited a few women from the parish
to come and meditate with me. We were just two for a while and now we
are a small, committed group who meet every Saturday at 4 pm in Sacred
    Heart Church, Lekuva.

I have been teaching Christian Meditation to the young people of St John’s
College for the last eight years. All 13 classes have their weekly
meditation time-tabled into the school programme. Four of our teachers
are meditators and this is a great witness. The junior students listen to a
teaching and meditate for 16 minutes weekly while the seniors meditate
for 20 minutes. They find these weekly meetings very helpful but
accepting meditating on a personal basis is still a long way off. Some of
our ex-students belong to groups in and around Suva. The seed is
planted, the rest is in the Lord’s hands…

Meditation is a precious gift to me and has helped me through challenging
times. The peace of knowing that “God knows what I want even before I
ask Him (Matt 6:8) is indeed wonderful. For me the prayer, Maranatha,
says everything – petition, thanksgiving, praise, sorrow. I trust God. God
knows my needs and those of my family, friends, and parishioners.
