FROM THE HEART
"At the point when I started practicing meditation in 1996, I relied on the
teachings of a number of different traditions. But I remained unaware of
the existence of the World Community despite having read the passage
from the Mundaka Upanishad describing the symbol of the two birds
perched on the branch of a tree. Twice I attended silent retreats
organised by a Protestant church where members of the Catholic faith
conducted lectio divina sessions. However, in 2000 I came into contact
with the teaching of the World Community posted on its website. Soon
thereafter I made my first contacts with Susan Spence, and Fr
Laurence undertook a visit to teach the commitment to contemplative
    prayer.

Fr Laurence's South African visit in February 2004 was seminal. About
300 South Africans now receive the quarterly newsletter of the WCCM.
Presently there are 9 meditation groups in places like Cape Town,
Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Protestant parishes in particular
are recognising a deep need to experience the indwelling presence of
the Spirit in meditation. From time to time I present 6-week courses in
Christian Meditation in the Pretoria area, host talks about practicing
meditation in the Christian tradition and facilitate a weekly meditation
group in Groenkloof. Group members coming into contact with this
practice for the first time are surprised to discover beauty and peace
inside of themselves and among friends in small groups.

The seeds of Christian Meditation in South Africa are slowly
    germinating."
