FROM THE HEART
One of the great things about Cathedrals is that they are open all day and
staffed. At Truro we are determined not to charge entry precisely
because if we were to do so an important and significant dimension of
    mission would wither.

Cathedrals respond to a desire for anonymity and the search for the
    ‘numinous’.

Set in the heart of the city of Truro our Cathedral reminds those who mill
around inside and out of the rumour of God and allows for spiritual
engagement without the trappings of religion. It is a public place where
people devoid of ‘membership’ or contact with any other institution can
focus and express their personal joys and sorrows. They write prayers,
light candles and savour formal and informal worship as if they were
    overhearing a conversation in passing.

Every Thursday lunchtime (12. 10 pm to 1. 00 pm) throughout the year
visitors to the Cathedral are invited by public address to join the
Meditation Group which meets in a chapel on the South side of the Retro-
Quire. Most do not but the presence of the group is nevertheless
something of a visitor attraction. Our circle of chairs around a central
candle is behind the open doors of a screen but nevertheless visible to
all who walk East down the South Aisle on the ‘Visitor Route’. There are
always a few empty chairs and we are delighted when one or two are
occasionally and very quietly occupied by curious visitors or holidaying
meditators who ‘happen’ upon us. Curiosity also attracts a significant
number to loiter and listen to the Meditatio talks while reading the ‘How
    to Meditate’ instructions posted nearby.

Being on public view has proved to be of no consequence to the quality of
our time together and our motionless presence actually seems to have
an effect on the general noise level within the building. The most
satisfying moment was when a verger told a visitor that what she
thought was a sculpture was in fact the Meditation Group. ‘I have never
seen human beings so still for so long’ she said.
